Announcement, Board of Directors

Today, CodeAI is proud to welcome one of the country's most effective architects of building the foundations for AI education: Katie Jenner, Indiana Secretary of Education, has joined CodeAI's Board of Directors. AI is already reshaping how students learn, work, and make decisions — often faster than schools can respond. Preparing young people for that world takes more than access to new tools. It takes leaders who can build the policy foundations that let an entire state move.

Dr. Jenner's appointment reflects CodeAI's future. As a state chief, she hasn't just advocated for change — she has built the conditions for it, setting the standards, requirements, and accountability that give educators across Indiana the ability to make the AI education foundational for their students. She’s cleared the policy barriers so that teachers throughout the state can build the classrooms students need, and so that every student can develop the digital fluency to understand, direct, question, and create with the technology shaping their lives.

Since Dr. Jenner took office in 2021, access to digital sciences courses in Indiana's public high schools has climbed from 74% to 91% — meaning the share of high schools without them has fallen from roughly one in four to fewer than one in ten. Today, 374 of Indiana's 413 high schools offer these courses, placing the state among the highest in the nation and roughly 30 points above the national average. Just as telling is where that access reaches: 93% of Indiana's rural high schools offer digital science courses — compared with 56% of rural schools nationally.

"Katie has built the policy foundation that lets educators across an entire state make AI Sciences part of what every student learns," said Karim Meghji, President and CEO of CodeAI. "She's cleared the barriers — the standards, the requirements, the systems behind them — so that teachers can do what they do best. And she understands that the goal was never for students to simply use AI, but to understand it, direct it, question it, and create with it. That's digital fluency — the agency every young person deserves over the systems shaping their world — and her experience building it at the state level will help us do it around the globe."

For Dr. Jenner, the appointment extends a shared commitment to preparing students for what's next.

"Artificial intelligence is reshaping nearly every aspect of our lives, making digital literacy an essential foundation for lifelong learning and opportunity," said Katie Jenner, Indiana Secretary of Education. "Together, we have a shared responsibility to ensure our students are prepared for what's next, and that means preparing them to think critically, adapt quickly, and use technology responsibly."

Her perspective will help guide CodeAI as the organization scales its work nationally — ensuring that understanding the technology shaping our world doesn't become a privilege of zip code, but a foundation available to every student.
