The Next Chapter

When I joined Code.org as Chief Product Officer three and a half years ago, I knew I was joining more than just a nonprofit at the intersection of education and technology. I saw an organization that had done the impossible: turning computer science into a foundational global right for 100s of millions of students. Today, as I step into the role of President & CEO, I am filled with gratitude, reflection, and a sense of optimism for where we are headed.
A Spark from a Math Class
My relationship with computer science began in a high school math class. My 11th grade AP Calculus teacher asked if any students wanted to join him after school so he could show us how a computer could solve the integral problems we were working on in class. Being the lazy mathematician that I was, I was first in line. That day I experienced the power of technology and computing - not just in solving these problems in seconds but freeing me from the soul crushing experience of having to write out the long handed answer including proving my work!
That initial spark led to a lifelong curiosity and application of technology, eventually bringing me to what has truly been a dream job here at Code.org. I carry that same "student in a math class" curiosity with me as I take on the responsibility of leading this organization into the age of AI.
Honoring the Architects of Our Mission
We stand on the shoulders of giants. To understand where we are going, we must honor the two leaders who built this bedrock.
For thirteen years, Cameron Wilson and Hadi Partovi have been the heart, and soul leading this organization. From their first driveway phone call that launched this movement to the 13-year "sprint", their work has reshaped the US education system. Cameron Wilson has been a key leader at Code.org for thirteen years - I am deeply grateful for what he's built and for his partnership. Cameron will remain an invaluable part of our team through June to ensure a seamless transition for myself and for our team. Equally vital has been Code.org’s founder, Hadi Partovi. Hadi’s vision ignited a global conversation that has reached hundreds of millions of students across 190 countries. As he transitions to his official title as Chairman of the Board and Founder, his daily involvement remains as steadfast as ever.

He will continue to be our visionary thought leader, and a tireless advocate for our mission on the world stage and a key strategic thought partner to myself and members of our executive team. Both Cameron and Hadi have shared the helm of this organization for years, and it is their combined legacy that gives me such confidence in our stability.
The Shift: From Literacy to Fluency
We are not just changing leaders at this moment; we are meeting a seismic societal change. There is a narrative that AI makes computer science obsolete. We fundamentally disagree. However, I do believe we need to reshape the conversation and move from AI Literacy - knowing how to use a tool - to AI Fluency - understanding what happens under the hood. By teaching students these foundations, we prepare them to be architects of real-world solutions, not just consumers of technology. They don't just learn to use AI tools; they learn how they work, why they work, and how to build with them. This is what AI Fluency looks like (from an AI Foundations course student): “I appreciated the chance to experiment with AI and see how it can support creativity, but I also learned how important it is to stay in control of the final product. The challenge helped me understand both the strengths and limitations of AI, and it made me more aware of the ethical decisions involved in using these tools. Overall, it was interesting, helpful, and made me think more critically about how AI fits into real-world work and learning.”
The Moral Imperative
As I look ahead, our mission has never been more vital. If we don't ensure that every student, regardless of their background, has access to AI+CS education, we risk widening the digital divide.
The future is unfolding in front of our eyes, and it cannot be something that just happens to us—it is something we must intentionally and with agency shape. Just as Cameron and Hadi shaped CS education globally over the past 13 years, with a refreshed brand, an updated curriculum, and a global community of champions, Code.org is ready to shape this next chapter. The sprint that Cameron and Hadi started continues, and I am honored to lead the way as we prepare the next generation to thrive in the world that awaits them.
