Allow your students to keep learning without skipping ahead—turn on “Stage Extras”

It can be hard to keep students from getting too far ahead of their classmates in Code Studio. Many want to move beyond the one stage assigned during the class period as soon as they finish.

Previously, students who finished the last puzzle of a stage would be automatically pushed along to the next stage. We don’t want to take away students’ ability to see what’s next, but we also wanted to help teachers keep their class on track. That’s why we dropped in a “speed bump” that gives students constructive activities to explore after they complete a stage. We call this speed bump “Stage Extras,” and we rolled out the first version this summer. Find the “Stage Extras” option on your teacher dashboard in the sections table:

Set “Stage Extras” to “Yes” for a section, and students in that section will see a pop-up when they reach the end of a stage:

This presents students with some unstructured, constructive programming activities— they can create a new Artist Drawing, a new Playlab app, or resume work on a project. You are in control of whether or not students see this, so if you want students to be pushed along in the course, you can set “Stage Extras” to “No”. Just choose the appropriate settings on your teacher dashboard.

We have additional improvements planned to “Stage Extras” in the coming year, and we would love your feedback and suggestions. Tweet @TeachCode or email support@code.org to let us know what you think!
